With rear wheel drive only (FR), traction comes from the rear wheels. With front wheel drive (FF), it comes from the front wheels. But with AWD, traction is obtained from all of the wheels. So now, let's consider what happens when road conditions take a turn for the worse due to rain, snow, ice and so on. Compared to FF or FR, where engine power is distributed to just two wheels, AWD makes the most of tyre grip by distributing power to all four wheels, to provide more stable traction and driving performance under all road conditions.
